3 Ways to Boost Your Influence When Attracting Sponsors: Part II

Yesterday I shared how you can boost your influence by collecting and posting kudos. If you missed it, check it out here.

Today I’m going to share a simple way to boost your influence when obtaining sponsorship. This is so simple that most new sponsorship seekers totally fail to do it. What’s this simple yet effective way to boost your influence?

Leverage your relationships

Every industry has their stars. These are the people who have been around a while and are likely a bit further along than you as a newbie. It doesn’t mean you can’t obtain sponsorship even though you’re a newbie or not as well known. Like I mentioned yesterday, sponsors have different needs and goals.

Many sponsors will be interested in partnering with you even if you’re not at the same status as Les Brown or Tony Robbins or Oprah. What matters is that you are active in your industry and connecting with those who are a bit ahead of you. When you do this, you’re showing sponsors you’re in it for the long haul.

So how do you leverage these relationships? Get to know the people in your industry.

  • Connect on social media
  • Leave meaningful comments on their articles
  • Show them support (without expecting anything in return)
  • Refer business to them when you’re booked
  • Do something together such as a joint venture

Truly the list goes on and on. The idea here is to be genuine and develop real relationships. Then, as your sponsors start learning more about your industry and you, they’ll see you’re actively connecting. This will make you stand out as someone they should sponsor.

Today’s Action Item: Introduce yourself to a veteran colleague in your industry.

Try LinkedIn, Facebook, or another one of your industry’s online hangouts to make a meaningful connection. Then see if you can do lunch or buy them a cup of coffee. This is not a pick your brain session, it’s a I want to get to know you opportunity. One thing about influencers, people always assume they have no desire to get to know their industry’s newbies — that is untrue. They’d love to be treated to a fun coffee date!

Monday, I’m going to share the last way you can boost your influence. I’m 100% sure you can implement this RIGHT AWAY!
